A 22-year-old man from Gokwe has been slapped with a 14-year
jail sentence after he was found guilty of raping his nine-year-old
niece in the guise of demonstrating how baboons indulge in sex.
Manasa Makura of Makore village under Chief Chireya in Gokwe North had
pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape when he appeared before
Gokwe-Kwekwe regional magistrate, Mr Amos Mbobo. Makura was however,
convicted after a contested trial and was on Wednesday sentenced to 14
years in prison of which four were suspended on condition of good
behaviour.
The State's case as presented by Robert Ndlala was
that on 12 September this year, Ndlala met the complainant who was
coming from school. Ndlala said Makura invited the young girl to his
bedroom hut where he told the complainant that he wanted to demonstrate
to her how baboons indulge in sex.
The unsuspecting juvenile
complied and followed Makura to his bedroom where upon arrival Makura
tripped her and raped her once before threatening her with death if she
reported the matter to anyone. However, the brave little girl went and
reported the matter to her parents right away who then made a report to
the police leading to the 'baboon sex' lecturer's arrest.
