ACN, PDP disagree on Osun contract

National Publicity Secretary, Action Congress of Nigeria, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
The Action Congress of Nigeria and Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State have disagreed over the award of N17.8bn road contract to a firm, Sammya Construction Limited.
Calling on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission to probe the contract, the PDP said the garnisheeing of Sammya property in 2011 on the order of a Federal High Court was enough to stop the state government from awarding the contract to the firm.
The ACN, in a statement, on Tuesday, faulted the PDP call, saying it was unfortunate that the sense of reasoning of the opposition party had been beclouded by jealousy.
Explaining that the PDP-led Federal Government recently awarded a contract to the firm, the ACN challenged the Osun PDP to also call for the probe of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Some members of the opposition party had dragged the state government to court over the proposed construction of a dual carriageway from Osogbo to Kwara State boundary.
A statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, faulted the call by the PDP, describing it as uninformed and mischievous.
This came as the spokesperson for Osun PDP, Mr Diran Odeyemi, maintained that the state government should show proof that the firm was capable of delivering on the contract.
Okanlawon said, “Garnisheeing means the seizure of assets to settle a debt or claim. It is a simple, civil remedy with no criminal import or elements.”
